What to see in Split
It is the main city of the Dalmatian region, the capital of Split-Dalmatia and the second most populous city in the country, after Zagreb, from which it was 380 km. It is an important fishing port and Naval Base of Adriatic, as well as an important cultural and tourist center; The ancient city is an architectural jewel, declared a World Heritage in 1979. In its surroundings there are shipyards, cement and plastic factories, wood, wine and food industries.
The city grew around the rest house of the Roman Emperor Dioclecian, who was born near there in 245 d. C. He withdrew in the year 305 to the palace that he had built near Salona and was buried there in 313. The fortified palace later became a factory in Roman uniforms and in the core of the city. At the beginning of the seventh century, after the nearby Roman city of Salona was looted by the Avaros (nomads of Central Asia), the refugees turned the palace into a fortified city and the mausoleum of Diocletian in the city's cathedral. The city was completely neolatin at the end of the seventh century.
